Other Projects

If you saw the video I posted about my science fiction story, Spiritum, you likely heard me say that most of my efforts over the past several years have been devoted to the aforementioned project; the key word being most. In addition to the Saga of Nine Rings, I have a number of other stories inside my head that I would like to tell some day and, now that the first part in my epic science-fiction series is just about finished, I’m going to be paying these stories a lot more attention in the near future.

My other projects cover a range of genres; some are set within the universe of the Saga of Nine rings while others are set in completely different universes. I will be focusing on the latter here. While many authors come up with the ideas for their stories as they go along, I’m one of those writers whose stories formed inside them a long time ago and have been waiting to be told ever since. The other main ideas I have have been sitting inside my brain for many years and the time has finally come to work on setting them free. The Saga of Nine Rings was one such idea and there are three others that I want to work on, each belonging to its own genre and universe.

The first of these is a gritty crime drama, specifically one that deals with organized crime, gang warfare and family drama. This is actually one of my oldest stories, born out of my interest in films such as Goodfellas and The Departed and predating the Saga of Nine Rings itself. As I grew more interested in that project, the others were pushed to the sidelines. The reason why I moved away from this story was the amount of research that I realized I would have to do for it. My vision for this project is a dark and gritty but also very realistic crime saga firmly entrenched in the real world, which means a lot of research into aspects such as location, people and history in order to get all of the details of the world just right. The amount of research I realized I would have to do quickly proved to be overwhelming and I ended up shelving the project although I have dived in and out every now and then and feel that I am now ready to tackle the research required to make this story successful.

The second is a post-apocalyptic story (yes, another one), set in the near future in a world that has been ravaged by some kind of cataclysm. This is another story that I have been interested in for a long time but haven’t paid a great deal of attention to. The reason for this is mostly due to difficulty in deciding the nature of the cataclysm that led to the world being in its state. I think this one of the most important elements since it will determine the direction the story will take and the situations the characters will find themselves in. At first, I was going to go with a simple nuclear apocalypse but changed my mind when I realized that there were already countless other stories out there that use this as their great world-ending disaster. I’ve recently been doing a bit of research into various possible doomsday scenarios (some very cheery reading, especially in this day and age) and have finally decided on an idea that, while not wholly original (it’s been done plenty times before), I might be able to put a unique spin on or, at the very least, get a more interesting story out of.

The final project harkens back to some of my earliest work as a writer. In my early writing days, one thing that fascinated me, and continues to now, is the idea of the kind of things that go on in a person’s life behind closed doors and what secrets they may be hiding beneath their seemingly bland exteriors, very much an American Beauty/Desperate Housewives sort of thing. As a teenager, I would often write soap-opera style stories that would examine these ideas and be filled with all manner of secrets, lies, deceit and murkiness. The stories I came up with were rubbish but the idea has always stayed with me and, now that my skills have improved, is one that I wish to revisit. This spiritual successor to my early work would be set in a small, quaint town and follow the members of several families, all of which have various problems to deal with and secrets lurking beneath their surfaces. It’s an old and cliched idea but one that I feel is full of potential to be entertaining and gripping.

So, there you have it. These are the three projects that I am interested in working on in the near future. I do have other ideas for stories besides these, but these are the ones I am most interested in pursuing at the moment. I will be providing much more information about these projects in future and I hope people will come to be as enthusiastic about them as I am.
